Ohel Jacob Synagogue

The Ohel Jacob Synagogue (“Tent of Jacob”) was founded in 1934 by a small Jewish group of Ashkenazic origin from Central Europe. This group of Jews, mostly Poles, would play a remarkable role in the dynamization of this religious space, a singular synagogue, characterized by its openness to the outside, tolerance and understanding for Jews of all origins, especially the integration of the descendants of Marranos – or b’nei Anusim –, these sons of the “forced” .

Hehaver Community

After the Law of Separation of State and Church and the new Constitution (1911), it is finally allowed to approve the Statutes of the first Jewish congregation in Lisbon, which is unfolded in innumerable private initiatives, and it is in this context that the Association of Israelite Youth Hehaber is founded, in 1925. An institution that began by encompassing “social and recreational activities, with Hebrew classes, parlor games, etc., which brought together both young Sephardic Jews and the Ashkenazi who came later.”

Progressive Judaism

The Religion of Israel is a standard and for the Jew it means to take a positive attitude toward life and the world, because he understands it as plan and a purpose. The Jew trusts in God and accepts His work. However, the Jew does not close his eyes to evil, nor to the suffering in the world including the suffering he has himself experienced, in turn, in his own body. Despite this, the Jew persists in his trust in the Lord – this is the Jewish godliness, its happiness, its strength and its spiritual treasure.
