It was on the 27th of November 2016 – 26 Cheshvan 5777 -, at 2pm, that the first Kiddushin took place through Hehaver-Ohel Jacob and, probably, also the setting of the first progressive Chuppah in Lisbon. The couple, Rebecca Machado and Sérgio Pinto-Handler, both of American nationality, fulfilled their dream of celebrating the most important day of their lives in Portugal, taking into account Rebecca’s Portuguese roots.

After a first visit to the Ohel Jacob Synagogue, on August 11, 2016 – located by the couple through research on the European Union for Progressive Judaism website. Rebecca and Sérgio started the process of making the event feasible, a small Jewish ceremony, with the support of the Hehaver-Ohel Jacob Association, within the progressive guidelines, according to both wishes.

Finally, on the announced date, under the leadership of Rabbi Alona Lisitsa – sponsored by the newlyweds -, the event is sealed in one of the most relevant and exciting moments for all involved, either directly or indirectly. Adriana Souza, Treasurer of the Congregation, had the privilege of taking the place of Witness subscriber of the Ketubah, representing the entire community that was thrilled by the symbolism covered, an expressive sign of Jewish life in Portugal.
