Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day we are closest to G-d and the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement – “For in this day He will forgive you, to cleanse you, that you may be cleansed from all your sins before G-d” (Leviticus 16:30). It begins at dusk beginning the tenth day of the month of Tishrei, continuing until the next sunset. This holiday is traditionally observed with a fasting period of 24 hours and intense prayer.
