Tevet’s 10th day in the Jewish calendar marks the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem by the armies of the Emperor of Babylon, which led to the conquest of the city, the destruction of the Holy Temple and the expulsion of the people of Israel from their land. The Jewish people were exiled in Babylon for 70 years. The tenth day of Tevet is observed as a day of fasting, mourning, and repentance.
